Teacher Development Growth Plan

Goal :

View, understand, and implement a student's IPP in field placement IV.

Strategies and Timelines:

Week 1: meet and familiarize myself with the teachers and students

Week 2&3: view and inquire into various aspects of one to three students' IPPs

Week 4&5: observe how various needs in an IPP manifest and how they are addressed through universal, targeted, and essential supports.

Week 6&7: observe how EAs and other support staff interact with teachers and students with IPPs

Week 8: brainstorm ways to make existing IPPs and support more effective for students and staff

Resources:

Individualized Program Planning, Alberta Education (2006)

Making a Difference, Alberta Education, (2010)

Indicators of Success/Expected Outcomes:

Increasing familiarity of individual and personalized learning strategies

Growing confidence speaking with students about their learning needs

Gain skills in offering learning technologies and accessing supports for students

Effectively coordinate and assist EAs in supporting students

Create novel and effective solutions to existing challenges facing students with IPPs

Reflections:

Based on my professional practice and my observations of student learning . . .

What should I do more of?

Give more time to discussion with my partner teacher about the strategies and accommodations they already employ.

Use existing resources on the internet and in Alberta Education publications--one does not need to reinvent the wheel.

Because

There is available expertise I would be foolish to ignore.

What should I do less of?

Spend less time and energy trying to bring the whole class along to the deepest, most nuanced understanding of a topic.

Because

Only a few students are likely to want to follow me there, many won't care enough about the subject to follow, and some will not be able to.

What new things could I do?

Work with an EA

Because

I haven't had the chance to do so yet, and they are eager to assist me and the students one-on-one.

What should I stop doing?

Dreading that I will make a mistake or offend a student.

Because

I am coming from a place of good intentions. Based on advice received, the chances of me screwing up so badly as to hurt a student are close to nil.
